Paternity

Washington Paternity Law Attorney

The paternity of a child born outside of marriage can be established in two ways. A man can sign an affidavit admitting he is the father of a child or his paternity can be established through a paternity test ordered by the court. Being declared the legal father of a child usually carries the responsibility for paying child support. It may or may not entitle the father to visitation rights, depending on the specific circumstances of the case.

At Compatore Law, P.S., we represent both men and women in paternity suits. We have extensive experience in this area of the law and can provide knowledgeable representation for you.

Paternity and Child Support

We frequently represent mothers who are seeking to obtain child support from the fathers of their children. Most of these cases are straight-forward. In your case, we can seek to obtain a court-ordered paternity test. Assuming it affirms that the man is indeed the biological father of your child, we can go to court to obtain a child support order for you.

Fatherhood and Child Visitation Rights

If you are legally declared to be the father of a child, you may be able to obtain child visitation rights. If the mother objects however, those visitation rights can be difficult if not impossible to obtain. Our firm represents men who wish to establish their fatherhood, and in subsequent actions to obtain child visitation rights. Skilled representation and argumentation may be able to make a difference in these cases.

Blood tests are no longer used to determine paternity. Instead, a small amount of skin cells are scrapped from the mouth of the man and the child and those are compared in a medical laboratory. The process of taking a sample is entirely painless and takes only a few minutes.
